Ponytail is an
exuberant stomp through a shorn cornfield peppered
in slightly tangy marmalade. Formed in 2005 in
Baltimore, Maryland by Jeremy Sigler as a class
project, Ponytail is one of the more joyfully filled
musical creative initiatives you will imbibe all
month. You can instantly hear the influences of
Smoosh in songs like 'Beg
Waves', whereas in tracks such as ‘Celebrate the Body
Electric’ you can distinctly taste a palpable
Electric Light Orchestra on the tip of your tongue
(but without any of that quasi-religious bitter
aftertaste) and a light dash snowing of the
Screaming Females. Aurally ingesting Ponytail sends
you speedily running
through the jungle while indigenous villagers howl
at you in encouragement from the opposite side of an
expansive brush. Wow, you can run fast.
Celebrate the Body Electric (It Came
from an Angel)
The acoustic
simplicity
that lurks at the core of '7 Souls Acoustic Blowout'
creates the atmosphere of doing a jig in an Irish pub
(which for some reason is in Brazil) on St. Patrick
’s Day while a young Charo howls at the moon on the open-door patio
behind you. Which is a good thing. The noticeable
lack of intelligible lyrics on each track (most
specifically on ‘Sky Drool Acoustic Blowout’) allows
you to let yourself go and speak in tongues to the
gods that Ponytail seems to worship in each
illustrious beat and bonfire melody. Freedom has
never tasted so good.
