The Complete Guide To
Insufficiency - David Thomas Broughton
Terrifying twangs;
igloo-cased slow melting howls; The Complete Guide
to Insufficiency is a tongue-in-cheek album by David
Thomas Broughton, musician and illustrator.
Broughton was seen by [^]LAND in an old-man pub
before the smoking-ban, and the wild eyed, slightly
intimidating lanky musician proceeded to add to the
sensory layers of plaid, Marlborough, Hamlet and
‘Chance’ perfume with his looping equipment. More
ethereal than the wisps rising to the wooden beams,
Broughton sang ‘Execution,’ quite possibly the most
romantic song [^]LAND has heard (“I wouldn’t take
her to an execution, I wouldn’t take her to a live
sex show, I wouldn’t piss or shit on her would I,
‘cause I love her so”) with the seriousness of a
Catholic confessor.
The skewed-folk album begins with the melancholic
‘Ambiguity’ and Broughton’s voice hangs above in
cold, atavistic stalactite forms and drips suddenly
onto your forehead with each pluck of the guitar.
Breathe. Contemplate the static layers piling up,
crusts and folds of his voice, crooked and bent.
Broughton is worth listening to because he makes you
see the colour violet when you close your eyes in
moments of stillness. A choir miming to Nick Drake,
filmed by David Lynch might make for an adequate
description of Broughton’s music, but you must
listen to believe.
‘Ever Rotating Sky’ concludes this emotional clutch
of songs, as we sit like hungry chicks on a blustery
day waiting for mother-bird to come back and fill
our bellies. But mother-bird has been caught by the
ginger tom at number 33 and she’s being slowly
dismantled by frantic claws. Feathers blow into the
sky; a single tear rolls down a child’s cheek at the
window. How could you go, David? How could you leave
us?

Incidentally, artistic
urges must beat thick through them Broughton family
vains, because his sister Kate is also a super
talented jewelry designer/card maker/very tall and
sweet fawn. David on the iPod, Kate on the coat –
we’re stoned love.
